How do i test my HD speed?

Me and a friend started installing identical software instantaneously. It involved about 3GB of unpacking and then a 1.5GB installation. He finished about 4x faster. Yet we both have 7200 HD's. Mine is IBM 65GXP. Anyway i think something might be wrong with it. How do i test it's speed? And how fast is it supposed to be?
