How do I tell what encoding is used in an AVI?

I have an avi that won't play that claims to be encoded in xvid based on the filename. Is there a program I can download to tell what kind of encoding was used to make it (and thus which codec I need to play it)? I can hear audio, but I can't see the video.

Update: THANK YOU! I can't believe I didn't know about that. I already had K-Lite installed, but I had no idea that was part of it.

However, I opened the file and under video status it says: Codec(s) are Installed. Same for the audio codec. It also says "File Length Correct" under the "Container" section. However, I still can't see the video. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it (I don't have any other codec packs installed, BTW), and it didn't help. Still takes a long time to get started, and when it does, it's only audio.

I think there is a program called gspot, included with the k-lite codec pack that will do this.

AWESOME! Checking now...

Edit: Well, that worked, but now I'm still having problems.

What player are you using? Try VLC media player and see if that works.

what player are you using? try windows media player classic or vlc player
also, try opening the video in virtualdub and see if you get some error - virtualdub will also give you the video format information.

That did it! I dl'd Virtualdub and it opened the file just fine. Thanks for the help!

Oh, and I was using Media Player Classic before.
