How do I tell if my XPhome is retail

Right click "My Computer" and click on "Properties".

Under "Registered to", you will see a code. If it includes "OEM", it is OEM. If the code does not include "OEM", it is not OEM.

My misunderstanding!

Look at the "Certificate of Authenticity". It is a sticker with the XP key on it as well as some bar codes. At the top, it should read "Windows XP Home".
Under it, it would read "OEM Product" if it is OEM.

When I said excellent was that I was convinced it is not an OEM but my Uncle threw away the box...is there another way to get a COA again for this? I just lost a deal selling it because it didn't have one.

Are you saying you do not have the certificate of authenticity?

Do you have the key?

Is the key only in your possession, or can someone else also have the key with or without your knowledge?
I mean when you say he threw away the box, did he throw away the key with it?

Because if someone get their hands on that key and have a copy of an XP CD, they can install it and use that key! That would not be good for the buyer.
