how do i tell hom much ram my mobo can handle?

I asked a few days ago if it was ok to put a gig 512x2 of pc2700 in two of my memory slots,then put a gig of pc3200 in the other side of memory slots 512x2 as well, and that it would be ok, but the computer would run the memory at the slower speed.after that he asked if i thought i was pushing it already or something of that nature.i dont want to screw anything up, so is there a way to tell how much is too much?
