ok, was it supposed to be a built by ati card? if so, it is really easy to tell, ATi never made a non pro card so all you have to do i look for the ATi sticker on the PCB of the video card. if the sticker is there, it is a 9700 pro. if there is no sticker, i'd be a little suspecious

I tried to confirm that my generic 9700pro was not reflashed 9700 or 9500, but no luck and finally gave up. It works great anyways, so I try not to think about it now. The card looks exactly like an ati card, but no stickers and was very cheap at the time $355 canadian.

ATI has a serial number/bios number lookup engine on their website to tell you exactly what you have.

I ended up using the problem report wizard on the ATI control panel. This was suggested on the ATI website. The wizard reported my card was made by ATI (looks like an ATI card), but do not know how accurate this is. Still makes no sense that ATI would sell their card as a generic powered by ATI oem. Unless dumping surpluss stock of course.

But they're still ATI chipset, right? basically they're the same thing except for pricing issue? or is there some other technical details involved in each brand? Anyone heard of the brand Power Color before? are they any good?

You could also look at the speed of the memory chips. The 9700 Pro only used 2.8ns memory. If it has 3.0 or 3.3, then it isn't a retail Pro. Now Dell had something they called an "OEM 9700 Pro", but it only used 3.0ns memory, so beware if they're calling it a "Pro" that it may not be a "Retail Pro".
