How do I take a screen shot of a video?

I got an mpeg video file and want to take a screen shot of it. Each time I do, I get a green screen. Should I disable some video settings to take the screen shot?

The problem is that the movie is being played using the video card's overlay feature, which bypasses Windows' normal graphics handling.

There's some non-free software that can supposedly get screenshots of overlay.

You can also open 2 instances of the media player. The 1st instance will use overlay, the 2nd will not, letting you take screenshots.

you have to disable the hardware acceleration in the properties menu but sometimes i find it easier to just use virtualdub.
