How do I sync a Madcat controller to a PS3?

I just bought a PS3 of craigslist for 200 bucks, it came with Resistance and a wireless controller. When I turn on the controller it just flashes for lights on top.
 
Not sure if the madcat ones work the same, but the sony ones you need to plug in with usb at first to sync them.
 
I called Madcatz and it is supposed to have some usb adapter, this didn't come with one. The guy loaned his friend 200 and took the PS3 as collateral in January, so he decided to sell. I pop in a movie and it loads and starts playing and I popped in Resistance and it goes to the menu so I assume it works.
 
AFAIK almost every 3rd party PS3 controller doesn't use blutooth and use RF and have the usb adapter as they told you. Don't know if you can get one of those just by itself so I would just go buy a controller.
