How do I store documents on iCloud?

Currently I use dropbox, but wanted to give iCloud a try. With dropbox, I just open the DropBox folder on whatever computer, put files there, and BOOM they are there on another computer in its DropBox folder. Can't figure out how to do that with iCloud. What am I missing?

you have to use an iCloud enabled app. there are no files or folders to worry about, you do your work and it's saved in iCloud

Leave it to Apple to gimp a simple concept and take away user control :( Such a shame. I guess I'm going to go on using DropBox.

repetitive monkey work

even us IT people are always looking for solutions to automate idiotic repetitive tasks

dropbox is cool and has a lot of uses but the idea of manually taking a file instead of the app doing it automatically is not one of them

Apple's system is just too limiting in this case. I have no way of sharing files not supported by iCloud. Nothing from office, no random zip files or tons of other things. And I cannot pick and choose which files I actually want shared. Given the limited space, that last one actually matters quite a bit. Also, the system does not let me organize as I wish. For example, I want to sort my documents into folders separated by classes I take and projects within those classes. With iCloud? No way. Like I said, a gimped system that is unusable for me due to what it does not do for the typical reason of dumbing down functionality.

There is almost no Office app worth a salt on iOS, so iCloud support for sophisticated Office system seems redundant.

But I agree that there needs to be a system. I do enjoy writing parts of my reports in Pages, but it's such a nightmare organizing documents in there.

So write a coco app that uses the iCloud APIs to be such a system.
Bitch at Microsoft for lack of iCloud support in Office.

If there is an actual demand for such a service, someone will fill the void.

the apple office apps aren't meant to compete with MS Office. iCloud is version 1 if that. the rule is you pick a few features to concentrate on and add the rest later.

icloud offers enough features for us lay people not to pay for dropbox. once apple offers more features dropbox is dead.

apple is the new MS, except nicer

It's meant for users who don't want to worry about files and folders, but it does have capabilities similar to files and folders. I have no problem organizing my documents in Pages into folders which get sync'ed with my iPad and iPhone.

A gimped system for you is a functional system for a lot of people.

What do you need it to do that's so advanced?

why does iCloud and DropBox have to be mutually exclusive?

use iCloud to keep all your documents across your devices in sync automatically, drop a save into dropbox when you want to share.

This is possible...right? (I don't have iWork)

I want to manage 100+ documents into their own folders, but also retain the ability to sort them by time created, project-dependency, time modified, size, name, order, importance, and be able to mark them as active, archived for reference, or inactive.

...on a touch screen.

Because I find it easier to whip out my phone and start reading and annotating reports while I'm somewhere...

i feel icloud syncs too much.

i use dropbox, in my dropbox folder i have subfolders that i keep everything i want shared. My whole folder for Univ work is in dropbox, so there is no dinking around, it all just gets saved in my BA folder, my finances for work are all in dropbox, so i can access them anywhere (no security issues, the finances are for a charity and as such they are all public anyways).

So I don't need to mess around with folders anymore than usual, same as if i used icloud, except icloud will save everything, which i cannot afford, plus, i use office, i like the simplicity of not having to export my files into a word document every time.

i only wish that powerpoint was as good as keynote, it is the one area where iworks outperforms office.

Impossible. What he wants to do is to organize his data in a logical fashion, and iOS is designed from the ground up to prevent that.
