How do I stop WinXP from automatically d/ling pictures from my digital camera?

For some reason when I connect my digital camera to my USB port, winxp downloads my pictures automatically, without confirmation, to a generic folder. How do I stop this?

No, it doesn't. It used to, and that's what I'm trying to get back to.

The software for your camera is doing this. Windows should see it as detachable disk space, and not transfer files. If it did I don't think anyone would use a removeable hard drive. :Q

For clarification, I use Win2K, and my cameras do not do this. If this is a XP specific "feature" I'm not sure.

try this. attach your camera and it should appear in windows explorer.
right click on it and go to autoplay. see if you can disable it. i know it works for CDs, but I'm assuming it'll go the same way for cameras.

I'm also thinking this is a software-related problem. Take a look at the software you installed for the camera and see if it is doing this automatically. There shouldn't be a reason for XP to do so unless I'm missing something here.

Well, when the wizard first opens up you're given a choice on how you want it deal with the situation. If you've chosen to automatically download pictures, then that's what it's doing. You may not have chosen this option, maybe it's just confused.

I don't know how to access it to change the behavior. You get similar choices when inserting a CD. You can go into My Computer and right click the drive and reset the choices.

Maybe with the camera attached, you can access these choices from within My
Computer?

Edit: Didn't even read lilcam's post. The same thing said in far less words.

I did not install any of the camera software, so it is definitely winXP.

Nope, it's XP. At some point he selected the option to 'always do this' for that media type...

My first digicam was in 1996. I am now on number 6. The last time I ever connected a camera to the computer was 1996. That is not always efficient. From that time on I have used a reader/writer and just move the media from the camera to the computer. It's much more efficient and faster and does not waste camera battery power.
