How do I stop Win98 from reading floppy drive when no floppy is present?

I know this has been posted before but I could not find it.

I'm working on an old win98 machine and it's got one of the 98 symptoms. Every time a save dialog pops up and I select the save button, the floppy drive spins for about 30 seconds even though there's no media in it. This problem seems to happen mainly with Firefox 1.03.

Is this a registry hack? Seems like there's a most-recent-path or something to that effect in the registry. I don't know; Maybe I'm way off. Any help appreciated.

I don't get that floppy spin action on the Win98 box that I got.
But then I don't have Firefox...

I'm still using Firebird on this machine, but there is an option in the "downloads" section to choose where to save. Should be one in Firefox too. It's in "tool", "options" here, but might be in "edit", "preferences" in your browser.

Start by removing it in BIOS/CMOS settings. Then make sure it does not exist in Windows as explained above.

I can't remember either, but it's a pretty simple solution.

That's a pretty radical solution to a problem with a software setting. Would you disable a cd drive to stop "autorun"?

The problem is not that it's trying to actually put files on the A: drive but even when I manually choose a location to save to it still spins for 15-30 seconds.

OK - if the BIOS won't do it - download and run Tweak-UI, and under My COmputer, Drives, uncheck the "A" drive.
