How do I stop Win XP Pro Mess Service?

I keep getting bombarded by Messenging Service pop ups from outside. I am on a DSL so that is how they are getting in. I believe there is a way to shut them off but I can't find it. Please help!
 
Under Tools / Control Panels / Administrative Tools / Services, find the Service called "Messenger" and set it to "Disabled".

You should really consider running your DSL connection through a NAT router. This will help block inbound connections to your computer. It will also allow you to share your connection between multiple computers. Routers are so cheap nowadays that there's no reason not to have one.
