How do I stop the sound from getting through my dorm's room-connecting door?

Hey. I'm living in a dorm, and for some reason there is a single, thin door between my room and the next. Problem is, they're loud at the worst times, and even earplugs can't block them out. I went into the room on the other side (without the door) and it is nearly silent, so it's gotta be this connecting door. We never (can't) use it, but I think we could get it open with our RA if necessary.

What's a very cheap, easily aquirable, effective way to buffer this sound? Put something up against the door and under the crack? Anything in the side or top cracks? Calling all acoustical experts, please. Thanks.

Been there, done that :(

One of them is nocternal, and comes in at 4AM laughing and talking loudly in Korean (EDIT: with his Korean friends... he's not schitzophrenic (sp)) The final straw is when he started practicing karate at 2AM, and when I told him I had a test and needed to sleep, he continued, and when I banged on the door, he banged back and lauged. When I confronted him the next day, he said "I didn't know you couldn't sleep with any noise. I can." I had earplugs in and was being shaken by him doing jump kicks! Asshole... but enough of my rant... the other isn't as bad, but...

I finally tried reverse psycology. I have to practice for my voice class, so instead of going to the music building, I just practice in my room. Pisses them off, but oh, I gotta do it! Now they won't mind contributing to a solution, either.

Anyway, some help?

Join the Marines, let a few 88's and 155's impact in your proximity, wake up in the hospital and you will never again be concerned with some assholes making noise next door.:D

I knew someone who had the same problem. He bought sound absorbant material and cut it to fit in the door frame which helped some. But what really worked was moving to a different room.

Well, they don't let you move here...

Any specifics on the "sound absorbant material"? That's what I'm going for here...

I am sorry, I do not remember what material he used.

its called putting a huge subwoofer next to that door and just using it at the strangest times. whenever he makes noise, you suddenly start blaring.

That doesn't exactly help me sleep, and I don't think it would bother him...

I thought it was the cracks in the door, but another kid who said he's done construction says it's the door itself and maybe the crack under it...

yeah, like clearly he's awake when you're asleep, so there must be a time when you're awake and he's asleep. payback is fair game.

edit: alternatively you could get some kind of noxious fumes and pump them under the crack in the door into his room.

Well, (A) that would only incite him to do it more, and (B) he will sleep through nearly anything... I walked in today and a few kids were playing a video game loudly, talking laughing, and just plain being raucous (loud enough that I wouldn't be able to sleep in the next room with earplugs), and he was sound asleep on his bed. I don't know how he does it, but it obviously makes him ignorant to other's sleep concerns.

But back to the topic... I obviously can't solve the problem... how can I lessen it?

tear down that mofo wimpy-ass door and install a real solid door, with seals around the edges and floor so minimal sound gets through. that or tear down the door and brick up the opening. :)

What's IMSA?

Oh, and while I appreciate all your humorous suggestions, but these jokes aren't going to help me get to sleep through an all-night movie marathon tomorrow :disgust:

The only real solution is to talk to your RA or somebody who's in charge. There's no reason that you should have to put up with that kind of crap. Whoever's in charge should either make the guy be quiet or move you into another room.

NM if you don't know already. You can get some industrial sound deading materials from the net. I used to be big on this when I was into modding my case, but now I forgot. You can ask in cases and cooling, someone there should know where to get some.

I don't know if it would work, but what about Dynamat or some other car audio vibration dampening materials?

I think I put them on enough of a guilt trip to head out for at least a few hours, so I"m off to bed. Please keep leaving ideas! Also comment if another one is good--I'm clueless here, so a bunch of single ideas will make it hard to decide, haha :)
