As far as I have found, once you let it start, there's no way to stop it.

Are you getting these EVERY time you boot? That would indicate either a defective drive or that the PC isn't being shut down via the Windows menus.

Well I let it run all night lastnight and it still was not done it was at like file 1035 out of 3500 so I shut the system down and rebooted and it just started over from there.

I read online from other people that you can hit F8 and select last known good config boot option to bypass it has anyone done this? Or maybe I can just hit F8 and go into safe mode and then disable the disk check from there?

One of my buddies also told me I should try to boot from my vista install cd and run the repair utility will this work?

It usually only wants to run once, once windows has been improperly shut down, but if you stop it in the middle it'll try again. Just leave it for a while and let it do the whole scan and you'll probably not see it the next time.

If chkdsk takes that long to run, then my friend, it's probably time to replace the drive.

Yeah, offhand, that seems a bit long, even for a chkdsk /r (full logical and surface scan) on a 150 GB hard drive. But I can never remember how long it should take, and it will depend on how many files there are, too. Is it reporting any errors at all?

By the way:
"Warning Microsoft does not recommend interrupting the CHKDSK process when it is used with the /f switch, and Microsoft does not guarantee the integrity of the disk if the CHKDSK program is interrupted."
