There are rumors of a few successful FX5700Ultras to FX1100, but even those were a strecth as it required a hard and soft mod to get it to work in a few cases. Most have unstable opengl and it crashes regularly even going back to 42.xx drivers....

The sure things are the

5800's NU and U
5600's

5200's are a crap shoot as well as the 5900's with mixed bag of results and most believe not a full conversion.....

See if you can exchange it with someone for a 5600ultra or a 5800non, otherwise it appears to be a very uphill climb and then may never be truly stable.

I have been blasting mine with multiple viewports, multiple monitors, and opengl test and all is holding well.....

Can't he just use the RivaTuner to mod the drivers so that they will work on his card?

You would think but when the guys in the know including the developer of Rivatuner say it doesn't work makes you wonder. For many it can detect it right and all the appropriate patches are done, only to find it crashes in opengk apps almost imediately or awhile into it.

I think the 5700 is actually a different line then the 5800's and 5600's...I think an NV36 and may be why the 5900's also have issues being from the same chipset...

Hmmm...interesting. The thing is, that mod apparently works on all the newer ATi cards, including the 9600 series. They are a different core from the 9700/9800 series (R300 vs. R360). I wouldn't count the 5700 out just yet; I'm pretty sure there's gotta be a way to do it. Check out the www.guru3d.com forums, they're awesome for this kind of thing.

from the best I can tell from successful reports is that the non ultra will be seen as a FX700 so figure the ultra can get 700-1000 range.

The main thing is the NV31 cards have some glitch and require drivers 42.51 first....I don't know if then they can use 44's and 45's but it appears 42.51 is the driver you want to apply the patch and hack to.

If it turns out that it can't take 44's and 45's this may not be a good option as this may not be new enough drivers for some applications....

Well worth the try and so easy to set back to original
