How do I slow down my internet connection speed?

Ok so this is a odd question, I know.

I have a home network, 4 computers on a Linksys router behind a IDSL modem. My wife likes to download mp3s, I play games.

Well, when she downloads a mp3 is hogs the bandwidth - making my game playing rather unenjoyable to say the least.

All I need is about 20% of the line.

Is there a way in Windows I can set her computer to only use 80% of the line? Is there a program where I can just adjust the download speed as I see fit? Slow it down and speed it up? Kind of a Windows internet bandwidth throttler?

Thanks!

Getright 4.2c has a "speed limit" function. But it's only useful on http/ftp downloads. If she's spending all day on Napster or any other application-dependant sharing service, you'll have to go another route.

The other route I would suggest is using the NIC diagnostics to configure the NIC card to full duplex 10Mbps, or something lower than what she's got currently. That way your router will have more room for your games' bandwidth needs.

Not really reasonable but you could always shell out the cash for a layer 3 switch and set a higher priority to your gaming.

in the NIC properties take a look at the settings: depending on your card there might be a whole bunch - Buffersizes, etc. Decrease them till you get desired performance.

there are other throttling mechanisms in TCP (tons) there is bound to be some freeware app which can control that.

in the registry there are RWIN TWIN values, you can decrease those as well, I can't remember where they are, but a search should turn them up.

sorry my brain ain't working all that well right now, there's an easy way to do all this, go to one of those Cable/DSL speed sites where you download apps/hacks to modify some flow control values. Instead of increasing said values, decrease them. I've played with one of those apps before, and I know there are a ton of them out there. I think www.speedguide.net is one of the sites - anyone help here?
