I recieved a few files from a relative in China that are using chinese character filenames. How do I show the chinese characters in the English version of Windows 2k? Right now, it's just a bunch of random ascii characters.

Check out regional options in the control panel and all will be revealed! I believe you can install extra languages there :)

If the filename is a whole bunch of open sqaures, then you will need to install the Traditional/Simplified Chinese support pack for Windows 2000, as the names are in unicode.

If you can actually see that they are ASCII characters, then you will need to install something like NJWIN CJK and switch on the overlay in order to see it.

There are some open squares, but not all of them. How do I switch on the overlay in NJWIN CJK? I have it install but still can't see the Chinese characters..

hmm.. I can see a couple of character when I'm using the file browser in ACDSee. There's still some garbage though.. I can't see it in Windows browser.

I have NJStar Communicator and on the toolbar there is a flag icon. I just choose "Chinese Auto Traditional" and everything works fine.

use NJStar communicator. download from NJStar site

once installed, start it and you'll see a floating bar with the chinese charactor for "south" on its left end. float your mouse cursor over the bar, and you'll see a flag button. Click it and then select either chinese simplified auto or chinese auto traditional to see which one works for you.
