How do I ship a set of rims and tires? Each tire/rim weight 50lbs. Should I tie two together and basically ship 2 packages out? I'm thinking 100lbs might be too heavy for the FedEx guy to carry around and the rope might loosen up.
How does Tirerack does it?

You'd probably be better off doing freight... Probably be cheaper anyway... Check with freight companies in your yellow pages.

UPS will do the tires, unpackaged. You just have to use strapping to hook them together. The wheels can be sent separately in boxes by any shipper.

I thought about using Fedex or UPS since they are reputable companies and offer good tracking systems. Fedex online quoted me 35 dollars to ship one rim/tire to NY (the most expensive zone to ship from CA I think). So it would be within 150 dollars which is what most people seem to charge

The thing is that tires are mounted on the rims. Should I send 4 packages wrapped in cardboard each??

I'd go with your Fedex estimate if you can get them shipped for $35 each. You'll probably have to package them up though.. shippers charge extra for circular, non-packaged items.

yup, they do. Just make sure you attach the shipping label VERY well (IE: tape it to hell)

Eh, not really. Most freight places try to charge you for a whole pallet load too, which is way too expensive.

Ok, then you guys recommend doing it in 4 individual shipments? I wanted to avoid that cuz the probability of something getting lost is triple. Another thing....I've noticing that I always get a cheaper quote on Fedex.com than when I go to the Fedex station (by 10 bucks usually). Will they PM if I bring a printout with me??

Most people I know of who have shipped rim/tire combos simply cut out cardboard large enough to cover the rim (on both sides) and tape it. However, your best bet is to talk to whomever you decide to use to ship it.

You going straight to a Fedex building, or are you going to some type of local shipping place that has a daily Fedex pickup?

If the wheels have tires mounted you need to either box them or use thick cardboard discs that are plastic strapped to the wheel. Tires alone are just shipped with the label on them.

Everyone always talks about shipping is sooooo expensive but really it is only if you want something shipped quick...ground or freight you can easily ship high weights for double digits.

BAXGLOBAL is the cheapest freight company, but FedEx Ground would do well for wheels....I have used them twice for wheels/tires...

I am going straight to a Fedex building. I guess I will go to my local supermarkets and get some cardboard.
