I think these are all you need:

- PCI NIC
- PCMCIA NIC
- Some cat5 cables
- a hub/switch (preferably a switch) or a router

That's what I'm using at home, I have the same set up too.

You have to have a router of some sort on the DSL line. This router is then connected to a hub/switch. Connect the laptop and PC to the hub/switch.

Are DSL modems routers in itself? I'm a little confused on the differences between hubs/switches/routers/dsl modems/cable modems.

I know a hub just splits up the connection to whoever's plugged in (lots of collisions)

Switches know which port needs the data/connection (less collisions)

routers are like switches except they have internal IPs? (a friend told me this)

Someone please explain in simple terms for me ;) thx.

Yeah, you've pretty much got it.

The Cable or DSL modem simply "translates" the signal to/from a form of data that the computer can understand.

The only difference between Cable or DSL (on the modem side) is just the connection. Coax for Cable, phone line for DSL.

Do Dsl/Cable modems have ports like a hub to connect multiple computers? Or would you have to connect a hub to the DSL/Cable modem?

would it look like this:

Wall (coax, or phone line) --> DSL/Cable Modem --> Hub/Switch/Router

computers plug into the hub/switch/router

is that how it works kinda?
