okay, first I have Cable Modem. Now i have it hooked up on PC with 2 network cards and i hook hub to it to share the internet connection. Only problem is that this PC must be on all the time for others to get on internet. I'm using windows 98SE's built in internet sharing by the way.

I've tried connecting Cable Modem directly to Hub and branching out connections from there. It would work, but Only one computer can be online at the time, if other computer tries to get on, it gives an error. I think it must be due to the IP address. And yes i get that error when i set both dynamic IP address.

Is there any way i can hook up more computers without one being on all the time? (without buyinga router). Thanx

ok, so only one computer can be on at one time? including the server or excluding the server? also, routers are the only way that i know of to have no server on at all times.

I think if you get sygate's single nic thing, you may be able to by setting all computers as server and then the first computer that get's turned on will be the server, but once that computer goes off, I don't know what will happen.

And what are you doing connecting the cable modem directly to the hub? connect it to the server comptuer directly. the reason only one computer can get on is because all computers are trying to go to the cable modem, not through your server that you created with the 2 nics.

You will not be able to do what you want to do without a router. If you have and old 486 lying around, do what I did and turn it into a router using FreeSCO.

Contact me for details if you can't find freeSCO and want it.
