How do I share an internet connection with no router?

That's my problem. I have 2 computers and a hub, and I can only get 1 ip address with my internet connection, so just using the hub like I did before won't work. Does anyone know if there is a way to do this? I heard I can set it up using Wingate or something, how do I do that?

If you buy a cat5 crossover cable you can put an extra NIC in the main computer, and plug the crossover cable into that nic, and plug the other connector into the secondary computer. The main cable(for cable modem or dsl or whatever) goes into the first nic in the main computer. Unfortunately, you have to have the main computer on to use the secondary one.

what operating system are you using? i use 2 nic's in my main computer... i for the cable modem and one to a hub, with up to 4 computers running off the hub. in win2k i just use internet conection sharing..

is it possible to assign two ip addresses to one nic? if so then, there wouldn't be a need to get another nic

I found this software that I've been trying to configure, its called AllAboard! http://www.internetshare.com/. It supposedly should let me do exactly what I want, but I was having trouble configuring it. Then when I was looking through its readme's I found this:

<< Can I use All Aboard! if I only have one NIC in my PC and have a Cable Modem, DSL or Satellite connected to my Hub? >>

<< With the exception of Windows XP, All Aboard! supports configurations where only one Network Interface Card (NIC) is installed in your PC. >>

My problem is, here's my setup:

Computer 1 (Server): Windows XP Pro, 1 NIC
Computer 2 (Client): Windows 98, 1 NIC
connected through a hub.

Is there any way I can do what I want to do with this setup?

LuCJoe,
XP makes it VERY easy to share an Inet connection if you have 2 nic's in your server.
I would invest $10 and get one. Realtec makes a very inexpensive 10/100 pci NIC that works fine.
I have the exact setup you are trying to make, with the exception of using 2 nic's. I share my DSL connection at 1.4mb/s.
USB DSL modem acts as one of the NIC's in the server. The other is a D-Link 530 pci nic connected to a 3-com Hub. Both systems run XP.

Since the other helpful folks have provided mucho info, here's my 2¢...

...think about investing in a router. You get a firewall, ease of expansion, access control, and a host of other nice things. Routers aren't that expensive anymore, anyway. Good luck

LucJoe,

If you want to share your internet connection between the 2 computers and you only have 1 IP address supplied to you from your ISP, then you can pretty much either a) buy a router or b) setup ICS. Pretty much your using 1 computer as a router when using ICS.. as another user mentioned.. it must always be on for both computers to be able to access the internet. To save you a lot of headache in the long run.. and to able to use both systems more 'freely'.. i'd recommend investing in a cheap router.. Netgear has a nice router/switch combo that you can probably find for less than $100. Look for the Netgear Rt314. It's a solid router that will be able to handle just about anything you'll need to do - it also comes with a 4 port 10/100 switch built in (I have the Rt311 router and Fs105 4-port 10/100 switch... way too many cables behind my desk it seems).
