How do I setup a remote access hard drive?

I'm going to college soon and would love an offsite backup solution. Is there some sort of hard drive enclosure I can plug into my network at home for access from college. I think it's called NAS but I'm not sure. Can somebody link me what I need to buy for this to work?

NAS's are designed primarily for use over a LAN. Some of them can also act as an FTP server to which you can then forward ports from your router, but that's kind of secondary. If your main purpose for this is going to be access over the internet, you're better off a) setting up an FTP server on your home network, or b) buying space from one of the many "online backup" outfits out there on the net. Obviously, "a" has the advantage of being free, but requires a machine to act as a server and some networking knowledge.
