How do I setup a dual boot XP/98SE on two hd's?

I presently have a dual boot setup on one Maxtor D740x ata 133 hd. Problem is programs that I have on XP and also installed as a backup on 98Se, won't run on SE. :( They kick me back to the desktop in SE. It's only the common programs that do this. It's a 60 gig drive that I have partitioned as follows:

FAT 32
C: Win 98se
D: MP3's, Games
E: Programs- data
-----------------------
NTFS
F: XP Home Ed.
G: Games, Multimedia
H: Important data

Would installing os's on their own drives fix the problem. How would I go about it? I'm also using a Promise ATA 133 controller card just to add to the confusion. I'm thinking that I have to reformat and repartion XP in fat 32 using the entire Maxtor drive. I reformat my WD ata 66 drive for Win98se and intall them as a WD (master) and Maxtor (slave) on my primary IDE controller. I install 98se on the WD (fat 32) and XP on the Maxtor while reformatting to NTFS. I load the ata 133 drivers while setting up XP ( F6 ) and then load the drivers onto 98se. I then shutdown and move both drives to the ata 133 controller and set the Maxtor to master and the WD to slave. Will this give me the dual boot option?

Those programs have to be installed, for each OS, in a separate location. You can run some programs, such as Eudora, from one location in either OS, but many not.

As long as you are using two different copies of said program (ie, one copy installed for 98, one installed for XP) there shouldn't be any problems. If they are... then they most likely arn't related to your dual-booting...

i never understood why ppl would try to share programs in a dual boot when it turns out to be messy in the end. Esp, if u have a big HDD, why not just install twice and be safer than sorry? excluding games of course

I didn't make myself clear by using the term"common programs". In actuality, it was the same program installed twice, one on each o/s. Neither o/s shares a program. Btw, it's been running fine for a month now. Thanks for the help.
