How do I set Win2000 to completely shutdown?

Spoooon

Lifer
With Win98, I didn't have to actually use the power button. The whole system would shutdown when I selected shutdown from the menu. That doesn't seem to be the case with Win2000. Anybody know how to change this?

in the control panel under power options, go to APM and enable it.

thx for the instructions for the p5200 time control 🙂

lsd, I don't have that option on my Power Options properties. While one of my systems shuts down entirely the other doesn't, and neither has an option like that. I thought that this was related to the mobo. Is APM a tab or a radio button?

You should have an APM tab if APM is enabled in the BIOS, and Win2K's HAL is in Standard PC mode.
There is a check box to enable APM on that tab.

If Win2K has been installed with the ACPI HAL, then there will be no APM tab.

Andy, that makes some sense. On the computer that shuts down easy, I made sure ACPI was installed too. On the other I didn't care.

Later on tonight I'll reboot them and check the bios.

<< If Win2K has been installed with the ACPI HAL, then there will be no APM tab. >>

I installed it with the ACPI HAL, and then switched to Standard PC Mode to fix the irq problem. Is there any way to get the APM option now without reinstalling win2k, cuz that's just a bitch to do...

I have no APM option either although I installed it with APM on. Anyone have any clues how to get this sucker working? Maybe some registry keys could fake it into thinking APM is on?

Did you upgrade your m/b bios? Some m/b bios APM (like Abit's) doesn't go well with Win2K, and need a bios upgrade to fix it.

Chris.

going to flash my MSI(Microstar) BX Master right now, although it isn't ABIT in most cases a new BIOS can't hurt, or cant it 😉. I'll report on the progress in about 10 minutes.

I changed from acpi to standard pc and found that the apm tab was missing. The only way I could get it back after days of fiddling with Windows and my BIOS was to do a reformat 🙁

Well, the BIOS update did not help. I did however keep APM and ACPI enabled in the BIOS and reinstalled win2k right on top of the previous installation. Works like a charm now.
