how do i set up RAID 1?

I just put a fresh install of Windows on a new hard drive. I would like to back it up by running it in RAID 1. My system had been in RAID 0 before but I'd rather have the redundancy than the storage capacity. Not sure how to go about building RAID 1 though. Before I put the operating system on it, I "defined" the array using the Fastbuild utility on my Dell machine in post. But it didn't recognize any of the hard drives when it came time to put Windows on. So then i just plugged in one of the drives to the SATA Master connector and all went well with the install. Can I just plug it back in the way it was previously and then rebuild the array? Or will that destroy the data I have on there? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I decided to do the same thing. I've looked and looked, from what I've discovered is that XP Pro does not do mirroring. I've looked all over and there is a supposed hack, but I couldn't get it to work, so it looks like I gotta use 2003 server.

It works fine in XP Pro provided you have the RAID BIOS active and working. Step one is to connect the two drives, and then use the RAID BIOS utility to define the RAID 1 array. If one of the drives is the bootable main OS drive, the other might as well be blank. The next thing it will do when you create RAID 1 is to image drive 1 to drive 2. So - make sure you putthe right drive in the right port.

It is not done by XP, but by the RAID BIOS that goes with your mobo or SATA/RAID card.

It takes about an hour plus to image the drive 1 to drive 2. Longer if it is a biggie.

Thanks for the info. I'm running XP Home. That shouldn't make a difference, right? Also, how do I know which drive to put in which port? Obviously, I'd like for it not to image the blank drive. Thanks again.

XP Home or Pro makes no difference with SATA and RAID.

If you have a mobo chart, it should show which SATA port is 1 and which is 2. If on a PCI card, same for the data sheet. On my mobo, one is called Pri and the other Sec. Pri is the first one from the bottom. Check your own mobo map.

To be really sure, you can take more time, and first create a single drive SATA 0 array with the good drive. You canboot and see it. Note which port it is in. Then re-do it all. Deolete the RAID 0 array and create the RAID 1 and doo as stated above.
