well for starters you should both be in the same work group. second the ip address should be in the same subnet

192.169.1.x range
subnet 255.255.255.0

also you need to both have network cards and be eithe hook up to a hub or switch, or be using a cross over cable.

if you do not have a network hub, and you are trying to use normal lan cable it will not work

A cross over cable flip the send recieve lines so you can communicate with another PC without having to use a hub/switch.

switch is better, you should buy one of those home network packages from dlink or netgear, those come with 2 nics and hub and cables... unless you already have the nics

A switch is better.
for example

100 mbps hub with 8 ports will share that 100 mbps for all pc connected to that hub.

a 100 mbps switch with 8 ports will have 100 mbps available per port. There is no sharing of bandwitdh.

Networking 101:

Each computer needs a network card. I have had very good experiances with Netgear, and others like Linksys. There are more expensive cards out there, but these will get the job done.
You will need a hub or switch/hub. Just get a switch/hub. They are really cheap right now.

Then you need RJ-45 cable (category 5 is the most cost effective)... Each computer needs a cable to go from it's network card to the hub or hub/switch.

After you get everything installed and hooked up, you may need to add IPX to your computer. This is done in network neighborhood.

Anyway, you could buy everything you need at newegg.com I believe.

That is a 5 port hub/switch. If you are going to need more than 5 computers networked, you should shop around for one with more ports. I have had good luck with my D-link 8 port one. You can always get the 5 port and if you later need more you can buy another hub and hook them together.

Linksys Network Card

and network cables.

Let me know if this answers your questions
