How do I set-up basic e-commerce? (UK based)

I want to set up a website where people can pay me by switch and/or credit card. I'm in the UK. How do I go about being able to receive such payments? DO I have to get a merchants bank account (whatever that is!) and/or a registered business name etc?

Just been looking at paypal, but it seems that to pay me (even with their business account) then the customer has to go through the laborious process of setting up their own paypal account as opposed to just putting the credit card details in. Am I right or am I missing something?

Any help appreciated, I just want the easiest quickest way to set this up.

No it's not really what I wanted at all. What I WANT is to avoid having to get a merchant bank account, for the time being. I don't want to waste time/effort/money until I know if this venture is going to be profitable, then I'll do it the proper way!

I just did a ecommerce site and you have to have a online merchant account for the credit card purchases.
