I have a Win XP and Win 98 computers sharing Internet access via a Linksys cable router. How can I securely set them up to share files with eachother, while at the same time having Internet access on both. I have Zonealarm on the XP computer, but I am not sure of how to set this up, do I have to enable file and printer sharing? Is that secure so the outside Internet can't get in? Thanks!!!!

Just enable file sharing on both machines. Unless you have certain inbound ports open on your router you are secure. They are all closed by default, so unless you explicitly opened them you are good to go.

Really? It's safe to do that??? The firewall properties of my SMC AWBR router/4 port switch is effective enough to open all files to sharing? Right now each computer has only a "Shared Docs" file and my main box shares it's printer.

run netbeui un-encapsulated between the machines.... its not routable and should remain secure that way, plus it wont interfere with zonealarm

Yes, it pretty damn safe, if you have no inbound ports open on the router. If you're a "belt and suspenders" kind of person then go ahead and bind file sharing to netbeui instead of TCP/IP but remember that you have to monkey around a bit to get netbeui on Windows XP since it is not installed by default.

Go to grc.com and have it do a port scan on you to see if you are vulnerable.
