I have a Dell All In One 962 or something, and I've tried scanning a 12 page black and white text only document to PDF using dells software.

When I scan at 72DPI, the text looks like ass and is unreadable.. 200 DPI is somewhat better, but the file size is 60+megs.. at 300 DPI the file size is 290megs...

How in the hell can I scan 12 pages of text to a PDF thats readable and >10megs?

Make sure that your color depth is set to only black and white or "text" when you do the scan. That should significantly reduce the size.

Yup. It sounds like you're making an Image PDF and not a text PDF.
If you use Omni Page to scan it should have an option for OCR during the scan. Thats conveneint because you can bypass the large image processing completely.
Otherwise just use the OCR function on the 300MB PDF to find the text.

I do select 'b&w text only' or a similar option and, I choose "300DPI (for OCR)", but still the PDF is 290megs. Maybe I'll try the Omni Page scan software.

What is weird is that I can compress the 290meg PDF to 10megs with WinRAR, but its still just a TAD too big for email, and I can't trust that everyone I'm sending it to has WinRAR.

Thanks.
