How do I rip portions (clips) of a DVD?

I will be teaching a class and want to use a few short clips from a movie I have on DVD as examples. How can I accomplish this?

This is how I would do it: Use DVD Decrypter to rip the av streams to your hard disk. Then use TMPGEnc to slice and dice your clips, re-encoding to VCD format as you do so. Then use your CD burning software to make the VCD.

From a legal standpoint, wouldn't you need to ask for permission to use clips from a movie? Whether it's a Theatrical Release or someones home movies, the rights belong to someone.

i'm not an attorney and certainly am now trying to be a spoiler...i only mention the poimt because i'm sure fair use deals with personal & private use and if the OP is indeed a teacher/instructor and shows it to one or more classes of students, this no longer is personal & private use...chances of getting busted are nil, even though the courtesy of getting permission is the right thing to do.

Good point DLM....I was not specific about just technical issues, so your feedback is welcome. BTW, it is entirely possible that my use would fit under terms of fair use, but I will check into it to be sure.

Isn't that covered under fair use?

If the DVD is encrypted the concept of FU doesn't apply. Thank your representatives, and the DMCA, for that.

I would rip the DVD then use Gordian Knot to strip out the section(s) I want.
