How do I Rip DVDs???

I was at Tomshardware reading about the new mpeg4 and stuff.. trying to follow the direction on how to rip DVD and covert them to MPEG4.. does anyone has any success with it?
as right now everytime I tried to start ripping and error occurs and my window 2000 just generate error log.. didn't even say what kind of error.... please help me out thanx
