Hi!
I think that I have found a small bug in windows 2000 professional, so I would like to report it to the microsoft. How do I do that and is it worht it?

Hi, adlep.

Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information.

OR

Start | Run. Type "msinfo32" and hit the Enter key.

Once the System Information dialog is up, click on the Tools menu, then find Windows Report Tool under the Windows submenu. (Anyone know why they do that?) The Windows Report Tool enables you to describe a problem and how you go about reproducing it. The report can send a synopsis of system information along with your typed-in report to verify your system configuration to Microsoft. "Click the Change System File Selections" link to tell the system which of your local files it may send to Microsoft to aid in the analysis. I would suggesting selecting all of them. No reason to report a bug if you're not willing to give them as much pertinent information as you have available. Those who are worried about privacy issues / big brother probably shouldn't bother.

It would be rare for Microsoft to reply, but that doesn't mean that they don't pay attention to these reports. They are categorized so that Microsoft can look for trends. Individual messages from significant populations of a given category of message are examined to help the company isolate bugs. I think it's a worthwhile thing to do.

You might also wish to discuss the "bug" here to see if anyone else has seen it.

Regards,
Jim

Just to save them a headache, check through the MS Knowledge Base first to see if it hasn't already been acknowledged yet. Chances are, it has. Along with 50,000 other "issues."
