How do I repair a bad sector on hard disk?

When I format my laptop hard drive, it'll stop a little ways through, and say, "TRYING TO RECOVER ALLOCATION UNIT" followed by a number that I'm assuming is the byte.

Anyways, how does this happen? I know it's a little part of the drive itself...is the physical drive itself corrupted? Or is there anyway to fix this on a laptop?

-thanks

Yeah, usually when a drive develops a bad sector, either more will follow, or else the drive may fail entirely. It's usually a good idea to RMA it if you can, or else get a new drive.
Sometimes though, a drive will just get a bad sector, and still work for a long time after that. I'd never risk it with data I cared about though.

you could try what I tried... I found a magnet and went over the entire platter w/ it, but for some reason it seemed to kill the entire drive, so i don't think it's worth the trouble... Just get a new one :)
