How do I remove Vista from a dual boot system?

I have XP on the first partition and Vista on the second, how do I remove Vistas boot loader from the first partition and then get it to boot XP as normal. I see that boot.ini has been changed by the installation of Vista, do I just change it back to the way it was and then delete all the Vista boot files that are now on my XP partition?

hope you can help

p

yup. just delete the Vista folder and edit the boot.ini accordingly. just becareful or you may have to reinstall windows xp.

did you ever figure this out? i just deleted the vista partition, but it still asks me to select which os to boot into. how do i get it back to normal?

Deleting the Vista partition is not enough. The main boot sector is still what is being called upon. As others have mentioned, you need to remove the section in the boot.ini file that points to the Vista install.

You could also try to use the Recover console while booting up a Windows XP disc, and probably repair the master boot record.. This might revert it back to the way it was, before you installed Vista

That's correct, manually editing boot.ini would take care of the problem. You can also boot it into the XP Recovery Console and run fixboot to take care of it.

haha i actually didnt. I've never messed with the boot.ini before. Whos says you cant teach an old dog new tricks.

Right Click on "My Computer"

Go to "Properties"

Click on the "Advanced" tab

Toward the bottom is the "Startup and Recovery" section; Click on the "Settings" button

This will bring up some of the things you can change such as "Time to display list of operating systems:" and the "Time to display recovery options when needed:"

Clicking the "Edit" button on that screen will bring up your boot.ini file
