Quick question. I want to swap out the Aiwa MP32 I just boaught for a new one. Just swap it with an identical unit. The reason is, this one sticks when it closes.

I had an appointment to have Bestbuy do it, but it's going to rain, and I don't want this freshly detailed car to get wet, so I figure I can do it myself. When I called to reschedule the appointment, I asked the guy how much trouble it would be for me to do it myself. He asked if I had a "key" for the dash adapter plate. I told him no. He said if it did need this "key", it would be hard to remove without it. What is he talking about? I'm going to go and see if I can wiggle it loose right now. I don't have a clue how you get at the damn thing in this 1995 Grand Marquis. It's a 1.5 DIN mount opening, currently using BestBuy's adapter and harness.

Just wondering if you can tell me what this "key" thing is.

Thanks!

Can ya get your hands on a Chilton's manual? I was just looking at one the other day and it talked about a special tool but my particular application didn't require it.

There are two little slots on either side of the face plate. There is a "key" you insert in them that alow you to pull the unit out. Basicaly it just pushes a couple of tabs out away from the mounting bracket.

Dang, I wish I had watched em install it now. So, if I don't have this "key", the tabs will be a bear to let go, eh? How far different is the key to a screwdriver? Is it much more than a flat, heavy gage peice of sheet metal? Uh, where do I start poking at it? Waaaahhhh :(

Edit: BTW, I'm swapping one exactly the same as the one coming out. No need to mess with the wires, cause it's got an adapter harness already installed.

Also, I've been installing these things in one car after another since 1974. It used to be fairly straight forward, but this DIN mounting is new to me. I put one in my wife's E-150, but the cover plate was part of the whole oak dash panel. Came off with about 6 philips screws, so I missed out on learning about this plastic adapter plate business.

the key is a flat piece of metal that slides in the sides of the stereo. that way, it just undoes the tabs inside, and you can slide it right out.

i don't konw about your car, but most cars have to have the front panel molding taken off - u might want to try it that way, 'cause then you'll reveal the screws that hold it down.

try going here:
www.sounddomain.com
and go to their forums and post this -- they are very knowledgeable and can help u out probably.

Unfortunatly "keys" very from stereo to stereo. I guess thats why they call them keys!
One of mine is two little metal prongs (fitting in two hole's, so four hole's all togather, two per side) Another is just a single prong (oddly shaped)

Good luck!

Thanks for the input, but I got the damn thing out. Turns out that one of the four tabs was busted and I DIDN'T DO IT! I'll see if those nimrods will give me a new one.

I also see that I do have to splice the harness to the adapter. No sweat, but about a half hour more work than I thought.

Now I can tel you what the "key" should look like. A screwdriver with the blade no wider than 3/16" and the shank ground flat to about 1/8" would be fine. As it is, since one of my tabs was already broken, it came out pretty easily just lifting the edges with a normal screwdriver. Off to BestBuy...

Thanks Again!

Ooh, I hate BestBuy! After waiting in line behind only three people for 45 fvcking minutes to return it, I went to the install guys and asked for a replacement for the adapter plate. He said they could only do it if they were the ones to remove it. I told him, if they had done the reinstall, they would have merely used the same old plate, right? He said all he could do was apologize. Aaarrgh! Butchers!

I got it in, and now own the two keys required to remove it. They're used to remove the receiver from it's own installation "cage". After that's done, the plastic adapter housing could be slipped out a little easier. Those clowns didn't even have it snapped all the way in. That's why it came out for me so easily. I used the harness they had crimped together for the first installation, so that saved some time. Now I've found that the remote control will only work if it's within 10" of the receiver. Could be a weak or worn out battery, but these CDC-MP32s are pretty new aren't they? How old could the battery be?

Oh well, the rest of it works flawlessly, so I'll let it ride...

Just use a flat head. Installing car stereo's isn't hard. :(

The tabs aren't needed. I mean if one of four broke off, who cares. The installation plate (the sleeve that came with the deck?) is replaceable. If you're talking about a plate adapter (for GM cars to use DIN style decks) then you can just buy another for $15.00 bucks. :)

It isn't hard. :)

Um, not really, Brutuskend. I assumed these guys could do a decent install with their eyes closed. I mean, all I've heard is how easy it is, and why not do it yourself. I figured I'd just take em up on the free installation deal that weekend.

I'm not too thrilled that it didn't close right either, but after seeing their work, I figure there's a good chance they hosed the unit in the first place! Tards! :disgust:

Oh well, that'll teach me to let them do it!

Edit: Yeah, I bought one from Circuit City mztykal, just in case the BestBuy plate was unuseable. It adapts from 1 1/2 size DIN mount to the normal size receiver. The 'broken' adapter still had 4 of the six tabs intact, so it worked OK. I'll return that $17.00, Circuit City adapter tomorrow.

Best Buy and Circuit City = sh*t installs. :(

You're better off taking it someplace better. Normal installs cost around $50.00. I usually do them for about $25.00 (which includes the adapter plate and wire harness if necessary). :)

You're better off doing it yourself. :)

I guess the point I was trying to make was, if they HAD done a better install, it would have been harder for you to get it out without the KEY. I can't believe they installed it and didn't give YOU the key in the first place!!

Oh! Now I get it! :)

I don't think you can make a blanket statement about who does good installs or not. I mean, some stores may hire some pretty sharp kids to do it. And like you said, how hard is it? Well, my particular BestBuy hired at least one lamer, so I'll do my own from now on!
