How do I remove the clip from a HSF on an Athlon CPU

My friend has an AMD Athlon with a (Globalwin I believe) Heatsink/Fan on it. The thin clip that holds it onto the cpu socket is very tight and doesn't want to come off (we want to re-apply the thermal compound). What is the best way to remove the retention clip on the HSF? I've tried putting pressure in the middle of it and it doesn't really move.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Screwdriver?

Whatever you do don't push on the heatsink itself, because you'll crush the core.

Try pushing down on the clip itself till it almost touches the mobo...then outward and it should come off. Be Careful!

Alright, it came off. POS thermal pad that was on there was melted down to nothing in the core, and its texture outside the core was like dry chewing gum. After we scraped that off, cleaned it, applied Arctic Silver and installed it, temperatures went (BIOS readings) from 56C to 36-40C, what an improvement! And so far its not unstable anymore!
