How do I remove jumpers?

I have to change the jumper setting on my hard drive from cable select to master...How do I do this??

Somewhere on the back on your HD, you have typically 3 jumpers, and normally you can see some inscriptions on their side ...

MA - Master (with/without Slave present)
CS - Cable Select
SL? - Slave

Most of the times you'll have to remove the disk so you can see the inscriptions ...

Just remove the jumper from CS to MA ... check the other devices on the same cable (don't put 2 MA on the same one), eventually enter setup to refresh info, then let it start-up ... easy.

Just for your information, SATA hdd's have no jumpers. Also no Slave/master designation.

Jumper removers. They come with a lot of mobos.

Tweezers work fine usually. Or just use a knife to pry them out.

I seem to be able to take them out with my fingers. Just use your nails to get into the grooves along the edge of the jumpers and pull it out.

needle-nose pliers work fine for me
both my drives have a space around the jumper area so you can grab it w/ pliers

note: i probly spelled pliers wrong 3x now

I'm lucky to have skinny fingers. Those with chubby fingers and no nails will have a hard time getting them off. I sometimes find it easier to use needle-nose pliers to get 'em off, but usually use my finger nails.

Sometimes the humor in a thread masks the aspect of a serious side. Most people only deal with standard jumpers - usually outside the box.

But, there are jumpers that require microfingers - those that go on 2.5-in laptop drives. They are even hard to come by. This picture shows them side by side. Not much to take hold of with a 2.5-in drive jumper . .

One day while prowling a flea market, I came across some surgical clamps - stainless steel - two for $5. These are terrific tools for inserting small things in small places. They are great for jumpers. They are like tweezers but have a scissor grip and lock in place so you only need to squeeze to release tension.

BTW - I actually have popped of a jumper with the point of a knife blade.

I thought I was the only one! I've been there too, but with a macabre twist...




Once, I pried a jumper off with a knife blade, it flew across the room, hit my roomate, and out of shock, I dropped the knife on my other hand and gave myself a nasty cut.

Hemostats. Radio shack used to have them, dunno if they still do. A must have.
