Depends on the program that put it there. Usually in the configuration, there is an option for whether or not you want in icon in the systray. I have a total of 1 icon in my sys tray. The rest I told to gtfo.
I saw this exact question on The Screen Savers. Goto Google and search for Win2k msconfig. There is a program available that does the exact same thing as Msconfig does but in Win2k. I haven't had a need to try it, but I would imagine that it does work.
I know you can get rid of adaptec directcd just by configuring it in some way. I did it on my work computer. If you ahven't found it by tomorrow, I'll tell you when I get to work.
