How do I remove item from dual boot menu?

I installed a new hard drive with dual boot, Win98 & WinXP, options. When the menu comes up, WinXP shows up twice and Win98once. One of the XP options boots into the OS fine, and the other is a dud. The option for Win98 boots fine. How do I get rid of the dud? If I have to do a registry tweak, how do I make sure that I get rid of the WinXP option that doesn't work and leave the good one alone?

Thanks for any advice,

Edit the boot.ini file (usually C:\boot.ini) to remove the boot option you want to delete. I'd back it up first though. That way, in case you make a mistake you can use the recovery console to copy the backup over the faulty one.

Right click on "My Computer", click on properties.

Navigate to the "Advanced" tab.

There will be a Startup and Recovery segment with a Settings button, click the settings button.

Next, under the "system Startup" area, click the edit button to "Edit the startup options file manually"

You will want to delete the whole line of the XP that doesn't boot. They are in order as they appear on your Boot Menu.

If you need any help, shoot me an email. kylebubp@gmail.com

As the other guy said, you might want to back up the file first, so, as soon as you open it in notepad to edit it, go file, save as, and save it with a different file name in a location of your choice. This way if you mess up, you can always go back in and rename backup... well, you get the idea.

Thanks for the advice. That is definitely the simple way. Unfortunately, I didn't see it before I took Robor's advice and tried to edit the boot.ini file. I got it done that way, but I would add to his suggestion that it is necessary to uncheck the "Read Only" attribute of the boot.ini file in order to delete the unnecessary menu item. Then, don't forget to go back and recheck the Read Only box after editing the file.
Many thanks,
