How do I remove a hard drive from XP Pro w/o making problems.

I first had a 40GB IBM hdd with both W98 and W2Kpro. Then, I bought XP pro.

I then installed a new 20GB WD as primary master using the IBM as primary slave and installed XP pro as partition G:. Why? I'm lazy. I then began copying data to the XP partition G: from C: and D:. E: and F: are for CD drives. Of course I installed all my apps anew into G:.

Now I want to use the IBM hdd for Linux which means I need to delete all the partitions [C: and D:]. Will this mess up XP currently on G:?

In 2k/XP drive letters for partitions are pinned to the volume serial #. Because of this the only time a partition's drive letter will change is when you do it yourself (through Disk Management) or when the volume serial is changed. The volume serial # will only change when you format the partition or otherwise use a program that allows editing of the volume serial #.

In short, you'll be perfectly fine 🙂
