How do I reinstall Network Neighborhood icon in Win98-SE? ?

I am trying to network two PCs (one XP and the other Win98-SE) and need to learn how to bring back the Network Neighborhood icon on Win98-SE. I deleted that icon last year when I did not realize it would be needed later. I'm using the Linksys 10/100 LAN Card and Network Neighborhood is required. I have searched the MS Knowledgebase and this forum and cannot find an answer. Thanks! 😕

I doing this from memory ..... so it might work,

Well if you see neighborhood in your control panel, double click on that it will probably start the installation process

If you see the nework configuration, id, access control tabs
since click Add-->Client MS networks......you get the rest right🙂

i'm pretty sure it'll automatically re-appear if you enable 'file and print sharing' in the netbios options. (right click on network, properties, in there)

Thanks. . . I'll give it a try and see what happens. The AT community comes through again! 🙂

Yeah, I think if you just remove all your network files, like TCP/IP and your netcard, when you let your NIC redetect, it will install the protocols and put the other stuff back too.

Also, I think if that doesn't work, you can download TWEAKUI and it has a checklist of icons you want to show on your desktop...that will put it back.

jfunk. . . I had TWEAKUI and had forgotten about the restore important icon feature. It worked! Now, if I can work out how to configure the two machines to communicate with each other. . . 😀

You can get them to communicate by one of two methods.

1. If you DO NOT have a hub/switch you HAVE to use a crossover cable.
2. If you HAVE a hub/switch, you just plug both into the hub/switch.

For both solutions, you have to ensure that they are both running the same network protocols and are both either in the same domain or workgroup. I am going to make the assumption that you should make sure that they are both configured with the same "Workgroup" name based on the OS's of the two machines.

cfjohnson, I'm using Linksys 10/100 LAN cards connected by a cable. When I installed the Linksys software on the PC running Win98-SE, the installation program led me through the set-up procedure. However, when I did a clean install of WinXP on a new PC, WinXP loaded the driver for the 10/100 card and did not offer the opportunity for me to configure. I assume I can go into the network on WinXp and configure? I'll try tonight. Thanks much.
