this unit is new but its been sitting around for a couple of years so an RMA is probably not an option

i was using it for a while but windows kept on saying a failed write error on the drive

and then on one of the reboots after several days being on, the drive stopped being recognized by the bios and the OS

the drive does spin up

what can i do to see if the drive is recoverable and if i can get any data off of it?

i tried the freezer trick but that doesnt seem to work

If it can't be detected in that or any other system, and you can find someone else with the exact same hard drive (ebay is commonly used to find them cheap) then you can try swapping the PCB controller board on the drive. I assume that the physical drive is okay if it's spinning up, and just something in the controller died. Do you have another drive that you can test the motherboard's controller with?
