How do I record action in an app?

I need to do a software training video that requires the viewer to see the app in action. What software should I use to record it? After recording it, should I use software like Director or some video editing to compile into a movie? Please help, thanks.

Note: I do know how to use Premiere, Flash, Photoshop.

didnt lotus have something that did that for free? Going back some years but I think it was free.
