i want to format my active partition- C - because ME is giving me problems yet again. I am fed up w/ the damn OS and am going back to 98se for games once and for all!
is it safe for me to just format c and then boot off 98se cd and install? or do i risk running into problems w/ the win2000 dual-boot config?
LMK ASAP

thx in advance fellas! 😉

okies....so i have my emergency floppy in hand.
made it using backup utility. so now all i do is format c and insert floppy after install and boot from it?
please help. details are always good.

so i deleted all my dir in C including windows dir. i only have the files that weren't in dir still on the disk.
after i boot up off of win98se cd rom and install win98se on C, how do i rebuild the boot record of win2k it killed?

thx

I think you would wipe out the boot loader for win2k and thus will not be able to boot into win2k. I would make sure you have a win2k emerganice repair disk just in case.

check your PN 🙂
Also, ignore win98 if it gives you flap about the disk is being compressed or it still has disk partitioning software on there. It is just windows me that causes that.

Win98SE won't respect the bootrecord it will overwrite it when you re-install so you'll need a Win2000 disk or setup handy to re-create it, but it's not hard.

Why not just use Win2000 for games and ditch Win9x altogether?
The drivers from nVidia and 3dfx are as fast in Win2000 as they are in Win9x now.

i don't want to ditch 9X all together beacause win2k colors are different for me in q3- strange.
i tried using a fix but it only helped, didn't solve the problem.

There is a chance that the Windows 98 install will recognize the NT bootloader
and won't remove it during install.

If it does, all you need to do is boot off of the Windows 2000 CD
and run the Repair utility during setup. Or go to the W2K console
and run FIXBOOT (if I recall correctly) to repair the boot record.

Wipe out your c drive completely, then load Win98 to the C Drive, then Copy the Ntldr and Ntdetect.com files from the I386 folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to the root folder of your C: drive..should be ok then..that will allow you to dual boot 98 and 2000 again..
