how do I rebuild a raid1 array (using intel ich9r)?

i have an raid1 array here. the 1st disk has gone missing from the config. but the 2nd disk is intact.

I deleted the partition on the 1st disk and I'm hoping to use intel matrix manager to rebuild the mirror.

Every time I select the 1st disk for the rebuild, I get some sort of message telling me the software cannot use the 1st disk for the rebuild.

there are no smart errors on the both disks. I tested them both using the manufacturer's tool.

I'm wondering if reinstalling the MBR on the 2nd disk would wipe out any trace of the Intel RAID?

any ideas?
