How do I reboot without updating and/or cancel an update?

I have my machine setup to download updates but allow me to choose whether to install them or not.

Last night it downloaded an update of Games for Windows Live which I don't want to install, but it now has the warning icon on the shut down button, meaning it will apply the update if I turn it off or reboot. Anyone know how do I cancel this?

OS is windows 7 64-bit.

Umm...if you go into windows update (wuapp.exe), can you de-select it? I don't have any updates pending on my machine right now to test with....

i have know idea but you could pull the plug or change the update settings or disable the update service or schedule the update installation or install and delete it.

AFAIK once you get to that point you're screwed, you can't do a normal shutdown without the patch finishing. Your only real options are sleep or hibernate at that point.

I just created a restore point and I'm going to delete the files suggested in lxskllr's link. I hope I don't break something.

edit: A winner is me!

I stopped the WU service, deleted the downloaded files, then restarted WU and changed the settings to just notify without downloading and rebooted. Everything appears to be working. Thanks lxskllr.

That setting in Windows update is a virtual trojan horse. Once you let the updates inside (allowing Windows to download them), they will get in, whether you want them to or not.

Why Windows automatically installs updates, even though you have explicitly said that you, the user, want to choose whether or not to install them, is a mystery to me. They should be investigated again, IMHO.
