How do I quickly connect two laptops together?

Soon my cousin is getting a laptop and we would like to be able to connect our laptops togther using a CAT5E cable so we can play LAN games together and share files (there won't be an internet connection). Both systems will be running Windows XP (mine defintely will, his...99% sure). So what's the best way of doing this? Plug the cable into each system and then what? Do I need to run the wizard? Please can someone tell me the quickest/easiest way of doing it.

Thankyou.

Make sure you set the IP's of each machine to be on the same subnet (i.e. set one to be 192.168.0.1 and the other to 192.168.0.2).

So after I plug the cable into each system, then what do I do. I understand I need to set one of them to 192.168.0.1 and the other to 192.168.0.2 but how do I do that? Is it somewhere in network connections?

Sorry I'm sort of new to this, thanks.

EDIT: By the way is a CAT5e cable the same as a crossover cable?

In the network connections menu it should have each one of your LAN connections. If you bring up the properties for your ethernet connection you can set the IP address there. Cat5e is the just spec that the network cable conforms to. A crossover cable is different than a normal network cable. It has connections reversed from one end to the other compared to a normal cable. You need to make sure you get a crossover cable, not just a standard network cable.

Ok thanks for the help guys. If the laptop get get's has inbuilt wireless I'll just create an ad-hoc network. If not I'll get a corssover cable.
