How do I put my PS3 into debug mode?

My God of War Collection God of War 2 keeps freezing. I posted about this on the God of War forums and they told me to put my ps3 into debug mode and "restore file structure" on my PS3.

It's more commonly known as diagnostic mode. You have to hold down the power button for three beeps or something. Searching the WWW should give you the instructions.
