I would like to keep the Documents and Settings folder on a different partition, so incase if i have to reinstall the os i can just use image and then be working right back again without having to backup my emails(outlook express) or lose data that i have saved on my desktop. Does anyone know how to change the enviroment varibles for this?

Junction Link Magic

Try this app, you'll have to copy all the stuff first to the partition you want it at and then delete the orginal. Then create and empty folder named Documents and Settings and then create the link with the one you copied to the different partition.

To copy and delete you may have to do it from another OS or DOS to make it work. There's files in Documents and Settings that windows has in memory and it won't let you delete them from within the active OS.

I'm triple booting so I just boot to a different partition.

Thnx for the link...this may come in handy 🙂

I'm still trying to figure out how to make the documents and setting folders work on another partition, and same with the program files folder. Isn't there some windows enviroment varible that i can change and everything will work off of it?

It's a pretty complicated process and not really recommended to do this. Why not just make a backup of your profile every so often and then copy it to a seperate drive. Anyways here's a link on how to do it.

Just use Tweak UI as someone else suggested. It's a simple 3 click process with this app.

This will only move certain folders of your profile and you need to do this for every profile on the system. Any new profile will default to the original documents and settings folder.

Hey thanks. I searched MS site for that and did it. Everything is working well. If a "normal" user followed those instructions, they would never get it done. There's a lot of things not right in those directions that I had to figure out. Oh well. Now I got to figure out how to move that program files folder.

If you follow the bottom directions somewhat, it will work with any accounts that you create in the future.

Ooops. The above was referring to using the TweakUI method.
