How do I properly adjust my lcd monitor?

I just bought a lcd monitor. It was on the cheap end I'll admit that. It is the 17" westing house monitor best buy has on sale for $129. It seems the text at any other resolution besides 1280 x 1024 is a little blury. I mean it looks like the edges are rounded, especially at 800 x 600. The text on the on screen display is nice as crisp but not any text in windows. Am I missing some setting in windows? There was no software to install for this and 1280 x 1024 is not that bad, but I use some 17" dell monitors at work, and they are fine regardless of the resolution. This could just be a cheapo monitor, and if so, let me know so I can go return it tommorrow. I needed something now, but if it is going to be this bad, I can wait a few days and order the 17" viewsonic from newegg for $11 more.

lcd monitors only look their best when using the default native resolution.

if using xp then enabling clear type also helps especially with reading text.

There are some gamma programs out there for LCD color correction.
You can google them but damn, sometimes they are hard to find. I did notice that LCD's are set (gamma wise) up the opposite of CRT's. It's very hard to set up an LCD in photoshop 7's gamma correction. It definitly wasn't designed to do LCD's.
Try googling, I can't think of anything offhand. :(
You can try the site of the monitor brand and see if they have any software to download, most sites have them.
And yes, the above post is correct also, try that too

what Markbnj and bacillus said..try clear type.. right click destop..click properties.. appearance tab..effects button..then in the second drop down window pick "clear type" and tick the box next to it. makes a huge difference imo.

*note* instructions are for windows XP

Thanks all!

Changed the font to ClearType and that helped quite a bit. I also am using 1280 x 1024 resolution and made the icons bigger. It looks good now. I guess I am not used to an lcd screen yet at home, as it is a little different. Now I need to hook up my old monitor again and see if that looks wierd after I use this for a while. I think you just get used to one way. Ended up not being to bad of a monitor for $129.
