This is for a computer in a dorm. Win 98 SE . friend says he wants to prevent others from using it.. is there a way to basically lock the computer unless correct password is entered upon booting into windows? (without using 3rd party software).
when i set password on main windows, ppl still can go in by just clicking on cancel..

They are not too much computer literate... so they wont be able to go into safemode nor registry to change settings...

thanx.

If he's going to be gone for an extended period of time and is really worried...

Pull the wire for the power button off of the motherboard.

You could spend like $9 and get a mount to remove your hardrive.

Then there's going to win2k pro and disabling guest logins.

BIOS password + screen saver password works like a charm. Actually you don't need the screen saver password if you're just gonna leave the computer turned off. The only way to defeat a BIOS password that I know of is to clear the BIOS settings, but if someone is determined enough to do that a) your friend will know and b) there's not much he can do other than taking the hard drive with him to stop them.
